Single Day Tour - Hartz Mountains National Park - Hiking Tour

"an accessible view of remote wilderness"

A window to the South West, Hartz Mountains quickly become one of Tasmania's first recreational pursuits. Protected as early as 1939, the area was first explored for its timber, however, the beauty of the area enticed the adventures as word of its scenic values were made aware. Incorporated into the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area in 1989, this pocket of wilderness makes for delightful walking. Rewarding hikers with 360-degree views of southern Tasmania. Hartz Peak is a must for those interested in getting into the wilds of Tassie.

Itinerary & Hartz Guided Hike Details
Departure Point and Time

Hartz Peak Day Hike Itinerary
  • Departing Hobart we commence our scenic drive via orchards of the Huon Valley. Enjoy rural farming scenery as we meet the Huon River and follow the reflections of the d'entrecasteaux channel past the towns of Franklin, Port Huon and Geeveston.
  • Taking a forest road for 20 minutes, we arrive inside the National Park.
  • Over morning tea we view the walking map, introduce the history of Hartz Mountain and learn the minimal impact bushwalking principles of leave no trace.
  • The hike begins through gentle undulating alpine terrain, passing two beautiful glacial remains, Lake Esperance and Ladies Tarn. A perfect spot for a swim on a hot summers day.
  • We then begin a short steep section of the trail taking us up to Hartz Pass, awarding a glimpse of the south-west wilderness. With Hartz Peak bowing in front of us, we set off for the final 45 minutes to the summit. Arriving just below the peak we negotiate some loose and uneven rocks for the last short steep push to the top.
  • On the summit we are rewarded with 360-degree views, encompassing Mt Wellington to the North, Federation Peak to the West, the Southern Ocean and Mount Snowy to the South and Bruny Island to the East, as well as below to the Huon River and Hartz Lake.
  • Enjoy a Picnic lunch at one of the glacial lakes on the return hike.

HARTZ PEAK GUIDED DAY HIKE

Hartz Mountains National Park & Wilderness World Heritage Area

The Painted Cliffs are a favourite of visitors to Maria Island. Stained red, orange and yellow, the cliff face is simply stunning, especially in afternoon light. The walk to the cliffs is enjoyable along the island only dirt road and returning via a bush track to view a convict built hop kiln. Surrounding the cliffs lays a marine reserve and if the tides are favourable, many rock pool creatures can be found. This is a beautiful afternoon stroll, and with the many wombats that call this area home, photo opportunities are abundant on what is one of Tasmania's 60 great short walks.
