Table Hill, Montagne du Plateau, Skiddaw, Mount Collins, Table Mountain, Mount Wellington and now kunanyi. Without 'the mountain' there would be no Hobart as we know it. During settlement the greatest asset was water, firstly from the Hobart Rivulet and later carried down the mountain through a system of aqueducts, pipelines and reservoirs to supply the town below. It was not just the water, – timber, stone, food, ice, skins, ferns and seeds were integral resources taken from the mountain. The greatest beer in the colony was produced with its water, endured and loved by Cascade founder Peter Degraves.
A place of recreation since colonial days and standing over 4000 feet above sea level, kunanyi/Mt. Wellington defines Hobart and it's residents, past and present. Whether you enjoy bird watching, rock climbing, cycling, running, walking, botanising, hiking, caving or simply just taking in views, The mountain is a special place to everyone who visits. kunanyi, a palawa word is the duel name for the mountain as given by the Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
